Girls volleyball: Murphy makes debut a winning one

The new era of girls volleyball at Schaumburg High School started on a winning note.

First-year coach Tim Murphy earned his first win as the host Saxons topped South Elgin 25-20, 23-25, 25-12 on Thursday night.

Murphy, a former Lake Park and Addison Trail boys volleyball coach, took over for Jeanette Pancratz, who retired in an elite group of IHSA girls volleyball coaches who won 800 matches.

Morgan Sterrett (9 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks), Dana Kiszkowski (10 kills, 3 aces 1 block, 5 digs), Michelle Candotti (24 assists, 13 digs, 1 ace), Gabby Paelmo (11 digs) and Natalie Asa (6 kills, 2 blocks) helped lead the Saxons to the nonconference triumph.

Barrington d. Mundelein: Barrington improved to 2-0 with a 22-25, 25-19,25-17 nonconference victory at Mundelein. Leading the Fillies were Andi Capel (4 aces, 7 kills), Peyton Tilley (9 kills), Tara Kozak (4 aces, 14 assists) and Suzana Andrade (7 digs).

Buffalo Grove d. Grayslake Central: The visiting Bison served 12 aces en route to 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 nonconference triumph which improved their record to 2-2.

Leading the ace parade were Riley Cross (3), Olivia Morini (2), Kristen Belias (2), Mary Nowlan (2), Nina Masciopinto (2) and Maggie Streckert (11).

Streckert also handed out 15 assists, the most going to Lauren Horvath who put down 8 kills.

Nicole Langer had 3 kills, followed by Nowlan (3) and Sasha Rozhko (2).

St. Viator d Elk Grove: St. Viator raised its record to 3-1 with a 25-17, 25-20 win at Elk Grove.

Senior Kendall Claffey led the Lions with 8 kills while Catherine Hickey and Carrie Leazer each had 5.

Michaela Mueller handed out 21 assists and Leazer led in the back row with 9 digs.

Leading the Grenadiers (0-2) were senior Johanna Duckmann (7 kills, 2 aces), junior Rachel Kandefer (6 kills, 2 blocks) and sophomore Megan Murray (9 digs).

Maine South d. Rolling Meadows: Maine South won 25-21, 27-25 as the host Mustangs dropped their season opener. Elise Kowalski (7 kills), Natalie Klancnik (5 kills) and Natalie Anderson (5 kills) led the Mustangs' attack which was set by Mallory King and Klancnik, who each had 8 assists.

Macie Robinson led the Mustangs with 9 digs.

Loyola d. Prospect: Loyola defeated visiting Prospect 25-12, 25-23 as Stephanie Masini (3 kills), Meghan Meredith (3) and Grace Cacini (3 kills) led the Knights.

Valerie Thomas paced the Knights (0-2) with 13 digs followed by Skaggs (6), who also had 7 assists. Gianna Russo added 4 assists.

Maine West d. Von Steuben: The host Warriors (2-0) posted a 25-14, 25-18 as seniors Jessica Riedl (5 kills, 9 blocks, 1 ace) and Christy Kolosvary (7 digs, 6 assists, 2 aces) helped lead the way. Lake Park d. Conant: Lake Park won the nonconference match 25-21, 25-18. The visiting Cougars were led on attack by Kristina Loznjakovic (4 kills) and Ania Baker (4 kills) while Yuri Hara had 3 kills and 2 aces. Fiona Fennelly handed out 45 assists for the Cougars.
