Boomers drop series opener to Wild Things

The Schaumburg Boomers dropped the opener of a weekend home series by a 7-4 score to the Washington Wild Things.

Washington hit 4 homers in the game including a 2-run shot just three batters into the game to take the lead. The Wild Things connected on back-to-back blasts in the inning to open a 3-0 edge and held a 4-0 lead after two. Sean Godfrey tripled home Ryan O'Malley in the third as the Boomers began to rally. Kenny Towns plated Josh Gardiner in the fourth and James Keller tacked on an RBI-double, bringing the Boomers within 4-3. Following another Washington run in the fifth, Gardiner doubled home Zack Weigel for the final tally.

Aryton Costa struck out 6 in 6 innings but allowed 6 runs in suffering the defeat. Kyle Westwood stranded 4 runners on base in working 1⅓ innings. Schaumburg finished with 7 hits, two of which came from Seth Spivey. Spivey, the leading hitter in the league, owns 20 multi-hit games this year.

The Boomers, owners of the top record in the league at 27-10, will continue the series with Washington on Saturday night.
