Baseball: Huntley, Crystal Lake South nail down regional titles
Nick Laxner fired a 1-hit shutout Saturday as Huntley defeated Machesney Park Harlem 1-0 to win the Class 4A Hononegah baseball regional championship.
Laxner, who struck out 6 and walked 1, allowed only a sixth-inning singles as the Red Raiders (30-6) advanced to Wednesday's McHenry sectional to take on the host Warriors.
Huntley scored the only run of the game in the third inning when Brad Model (3 hits) singled, went to second on a passed ball, third in a bunt by Adam Smylie and then home on a squeeze bunt from Brad Maurer.
Joe Boland added 2 hits for the Raiders.
CL South 8, Grant 3: Crystal Lake South won the Class 4A Cary-Grove regional as Brian Fuentes' 3-run home run in the fifth inning was the big blast for the Gators (31-5), who play DeKalb in the McHenry sectional semifinals Wednesday. Griffin Bright added a double and 2 RBI for CLS while Kory Olsen had 2 hits and an RBI. Kyle Lang went 6 innings and allowed 8 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks to earn the win.
Somonauk 3, Aurora Christian 1: A walk off 2-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning ended the season for Aurora Christian at the Class 1A Harvest Christian sectional championship played at Judson University in Elgin. MJ Stavola had a double for the Eagles (24-9), who were held to 4 hits in the loss.
