Boys tennis: Stevenson stays in 2A trophy hunt

Sam Komis, Zachary Kim and the doubles team of Matt Harvey/Brian Weisberg each went 2-0, as Stevenson enjoyed a successful first day in the IHSA boys tennis Class 2A state meet at District 211, 214 and 220 courts Thursday.

Naperville Central and Glenbrook North finished the day atop the team standings with 15 points each. Stevenson and New Trier are tied for third (14 each), Hinsdale Central (12) is fifth, and Glenbrook South and Lake Forest share sixth (11 each).

Both Komis and Kim, 9-16 seeds, started the day with a pair of straight-set wins at Hersey. At Rolling Meadows, Harvey/Weisberg also won their two matches in straight sets. Stevenson's team of Aswath Viswanathan/Arjun Sheelvanth opened with a three-set win before dropping back-to-back matches.

Libertyville sophomore Hayden Friese won his first match before losing in the second round. His teammates Kenny Herrmann and Nathan Valley sandwiched a pair of wins between a second-round loss.

Warren sophomore Cecil Mella rebounded from a first-round loss to outlast Rockton Hononegah's Brian Trefilek 4-6, 6-1, (10-4), but then suffered a 6-2, 6-7 (5), (10-2) loss to Bryce McClanahan of Glenbrook South. Warren's doubles team of Stefan Radovic/Caleb Gudeman notched a first-round win but then dropped two straight.

In Class 1A, Wauconda junior/9-16 seed Brian Hackman dominated his first two opponents at Buffalo Grove, beating both of them 6-0, 6-0. Wauconda's doubles team of Andrew Lu/Connor Splingaire started with a three-set win before losing consecutive matches.

Vernon Hills' doubles team of Cole Guillaume/Harsha Namburi went 1-2, but Matt Nguyen and Nikhil Mangtani are still alive after the doubles partners bounced back from a second-round loss to post a 3-6, 6-0, (10-3) win in the second-round consolation bracket.

Antioch junior Kyle Boudreau won a three-set match in his opener but lost his next two.
