Boomers hold off River City 4-3

The Schaumburg Boomers held off the River City Rascals on Wednesday morning, notching a 4-3 win in the opener of a six-game homestand.

River City led twice in the contest but Schaumburg rallied in the bottom of the inning on both occasions. The Rascals scored a run in the first without a hit against starter Lars Liguori. Schaumburg came back in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter to lead 2-1. Kenny Towns was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game and an infield single from Sean Godfrey put the Boomers ahead. Two runs in the fifth enabled River City to open a brief 3-2 lead before Schaumburg struck twice in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run on a double play and a wild pitch.

Liguori worked six innings and allowed three runs to earn his first victory of the season. Rob McDonnell and Alec Kenilvort each worked scoreless frames to set the stage for Jake Joyce to finish out the game in the ninth and earn his second save. Schaumburg finished with seven hits, two of which came from Spivey, who has posted six straight multihit performances.

The series continues with 21-and-Over Night on Thursday with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. LHP Gunnar Kines (2-0, 0.75) and RHP Aryton Costa (1-0, 5.00) will start for the Boomers against RHP Tim Koons (0-1, 9.00) and LHP Dan Ludwig (1-0, 1.17).
