Baseball: Carmel reaches 20 victories

Carmel Catholic's baseball team reached 20 victories with a 10-0, 5-inning victory over Evanston on Thursday in a nonconference matchup.

Jay Ward allowed Evasnton 3 hits and struck out four with 1 walk to earn the victory.

Drew Wiegman homered, stole 2 bases and drove in 3 runs in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Eddie Pietschmann went 1-for-2 with 4 steals and scored twice, Austin Ehren had 2 hits and scored 4 runs and Joel Basara double and drove in a run.

Warren 11, Highland Park 5: Luke Schmitt hit a grand slam and finished 3-for-5 with 5 RBI as the visiting Blue Devils rolled to a nonconference triumph.

Jake Nitch and Matt Temaner had 2 hits apiece for Warren, and Evan Hill contributed a double.

Pasquale DeFilippis tossed 6 relief innings, allowing 1 earned run and 6 hits with 4 strikeouts, to pick up the pitching decision.

Grant 5, Grayslake Central 1: The Bulldogs topped the Rams for a second straight day as starter Nick Malmberg (4-3) tossed a complete-game 6-hitter in Northern Lake County Conference play.

Ray Guardado finished 2-for-3 and drove in 2 runs for Grant (18-12), and Jimmy Friel had an RBI single and also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Lakes 9, Wheeling 3: The visiting Eagles scored 3 runs in the first inning and led the whole way in a nonconference win.

Tom Jones had a double and Jason Volpe finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI as Lakes (8-11) drew 5 walks and took advantage of 3 Wheeling errors.

Wauconda 11, Round Lake 0 (6 inn.): Brock Glavey limited the host Panthers to 3 hits and struck out seven in a complete-game win in Northern Lake County Conference play.

Spencer Bills homered and drove in 4 runs for Wauconda, which improved to 11-7 in the league. Jake Harmon (3 RBI) and John Herbst both had 2 hits for the Bulldogs.
