Baseball: Huntley clinches share of FVC title

Huntley closed in on the outright Fox Valley Conference baseball championship Wednesday, beating Prairie Ridge 14-2 as Cary-Grove was upending Crystal Lake South 6-5.

That means the Red Raiders (27-5, 19-3) have clinched no worse than a share of the title and they can claim it outright on Thursday when they host PR in Game 2 of the series.

In Wednesday's win, Jeff Heinrich (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI) and Brad Maurer each hit home runs for Huntley while Brad Model, Joe Rizzo (3 RBI) and Joe Boland (2B) had 2 hits each.

Keegan Garcelon was the winning pitcher in relief.

Cary-Grove 6, CL South 5: Zach Willis' groundout scored Tyler Pennington (2 hits, 2B) with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as Cary-Grove coach Don Sutherland recorded his 599th career win. Ben Levicki, Ryan Ignoffo and Collin Walsh each had home runs for the Trojans (24-7, 19-6) and Justin Trausch added 2 hits. Nick Wolski had a double and 2 RBI for CLS (26-5, 17-5) and Ryan Parquette added a double.

South Elgin 9, Glenbard East 7: Kevin Barry had a 3-run home run to lead South Elgin (19-4, 17-2) to another Upstate Eight Valley win. Nate Gomez (3 hits, 2 doubles, RBI), Adam Walker (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Zach Saunders (2B, 2 RBI) also contributed for the Storm. Walker was the winning pitcher in relief.

Streamwood 13, Larkin 3: Jesse Rico had 3 hits with a double and Adam Sojda added 3 hits and an RBI to lead Streamwood (15-14, 10-12) to a UEC River win. Ryan Fitzgerald added 2 hits and 4 RBI for the Sabres while Dominic Robles (2B) and Jeremy Beeson (2 RBI) had 2 hits each. Max Anderson, David Bello and Cy Kerber each had doubles for Larkin (12-16, 8-14).

Bartlett 24, East Aurora 3: Martin Moreno (2 hits, 2 RBI), Andrew Fehr (5 RBI) and Joey Tomazin (3 hits, 5 RBI) each had home runs for Bartlett (18-12, 13-8) in its UEC Valley win. David Jaske (2B, 2 RBI), Eric Johansen (RBI), Ben Fisher (2B), Jake Flint (2B, 2 RBI), Mitch Sommer and Joey Allen (2B, 2 RBI) added 2 hits each for the Hawks. Tyler Yang was the winning pitcher.

Batavia 14, Elgin 4: Quinn O'Brien (2B, 3 RBI), winning pitcher Jared Martin (2B, 2 RBI), Jake Robinson (2B, 3B, 2 RBI) and Brent Norkus (2B, 3 RBI) each had 2 hits for Batavia (10-15, 7-12) in this UEC River game. JC Fortmann, Kyle Coates (2B, RBI) and Jack Sitter had 2 hits each for Elgin (5-26, 3-21) and Hayden Gibson added a double.

West Aurora 11, West Chicago 1: Dustin Tomas allowed 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk for West Aurora (10-21, 9-13) in the UEC Valley. He also had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI while David Woods (2 hits, 3B, RBI), Alex Diaz (2 hits, 2B, RBI) and Jacob Pavey (2B, 2 RBI) also contributed for the Blackhawks.

Burlington Central 13, Harvard 0: Josh Noeska allowed 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks for the Rockets (24-9, 13-4) in their Kishwaukee River win. He also had 4 hits and an RBI while Clay Milas (2 hits, RBI), Brandon Van Buren (2 RBI), Ryan Knowlton (2 hits, 2 RBI), Zach Schutta (2 hits, 2B) and Nick Matijevic (2B) added to the BC offense.

Harvest Christian 21, Deerfield Rochelle Zell 0: Drew Lewis hit a home run and had 4 RBI and Joey Pepper added 3 hits with 2 doubles and 4 RBI to lead Harvest (28-5) to a win in the opening round of the Class 1A Luther North regional. Zach Pawelek threw 3 innings and allowed 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks for the Lions, who will play for the regional title on Saturday.

Aurora Christian 23, Chicago Douglass 0: Jacob Brothers threw a 4-inning no-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks for Aurora Christian (23-8-1) in the first round of the Class 1A Aurora Christian regional. Tanner Dissell and Clark Turek each had triples while Ethan Stoneberg, Jake Kuntzendorf and MJ Stavola doubled for the Eagles.

Elgin Academy 3, Christian Liberty 1: At the Class 1A Walther Christian regional, Justin King allowed 2 hits, no earned runs and had 7 strikeouts and 3 walks as the Hilltoppers, who scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, advanced to Saturday's regional final round. Andrew Wilson and Ethan Hill each had doubles for EA (21-5).
