Baseball: Machon, Wauconda hit it big against Round Lake

Alex Machon homered twice and knocked in 8 runs, and Wauconda's baseball team rolled to a 25-4 win over visiting Round Lake in five innings in Northern Lake County Conference action Tuesday.

Conner Olson was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and 3 RBI, and Anthony Cairo went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI, as the Bulldogs pounded out 21 hits. John Herbst was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI. Wauconda (9-7 NLCC) got 2 hits apiece from Machon, Spencer Bills (homer, 3 RBI), winning pitcher Jacob Bicknase (RBI), Tyler Husko (triple, RBI) and Ty Janik (RBI).

Bicknase allowed only 1 earned run in 5 innings, striking out five and walking two.

Round Lake got 2 hits from Lucas Hollingsworth and a double from Tyler Roman.

Highland Park 9, Vernon Hills 6 (11 inn.): In a continuation of a game called due to darkness on Monday, the Giants scored 3 runs in the 11th inning of the Central Suburban League game.

Vernon Hills 8, Highland Park 5: In the teams' regularly scheduled game, the Cougars bounced back, as Brennan Reback stole his 33rd base of the season, breaking the team's single-season record.

Jack Peterson earned the win in relief. Caleb Thomson saved the game, throwing the final 2⅓ innings. Matt Gramins had 3 hits for Vernon Hills (17-13-1). Reback and Nick Marras also had 2 hits each.

Carmel 17, St. Viator 5: Drew Wiegman was 2-for-4 with a homer, triple and 6 RBI, and Eddie Pietschmann went 2-for-2 with a home run and 4 RBI for the Corsairs in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game.

Joel Basara homered and knocked in 3 runs for Carmel (18-7, 13-4). Ben Wiegman and Liam Evans had doubles for the Corsairs, and Charley Dir earned the win.

Grayslake North 6, Antioch 5 (9 inn.): The Knights scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the win in a key Northern Lake County game.

Grayslake North (12-5) leads Grant (11-5) by a half game atop the NLCC standings, but the Knights own the tiebreaker since they beat the Bulldogs 2 out of 3 times this season. Grayslake North raps up conference action at Antioch on Thursday. Grant, which was idle Tuesday, hosts Grayslake Central on Wednesday and visits Grayslake Central on Thursday.

Sebastian Sancen was 4-for-5 with a double in Tuesday's extra-inning game, and Austin DeLao went 2-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI. Danny Yates finished 2-for-4, and Nick Lovitsch had a double.

Antioch (10-7), which forced extra innings with a run in the seventh, got a 3-for-5 effort that included 2 doubles from Alex Unekis. Connor Geidner was 2-for-5 and Marc Huston had a double.

Stevenson 10, Warren 3: Henry Marchese was 4-for-4 with a homer, triple, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, as the host Patriots avenged Monday's North Suburban loss.

Hayden Shape also homered for Stevenson (12-8 NSC) and finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. Evan Kiah added a double in the win.

Warren (13-6 NSC) got 2 hits, including a double, from Lucas Schmitt.

Mundelein 11, Lake Zurich 7: The host Mustangs scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 7-7 tie in the North Suburban contest.

Brett Parola hit a 2-run homer and went 2-for-3 for Mundelein (27-5, 15-5), Nick Stricker was 3-for-4, and Brendan Murphy went 3-for-3 with a double. Winning pitcher Ryan Patel and Ryan Magee (double) were both 2-for-4.

Ben Cornelius singled, walked twice and drove in a run for Lake Zurich, and Dylan Niedzwicki had a single and 3 RBI.
