Softball: Freeman notches first 20-win season at Hersey

Hersey coach Molly Freeman watched her Huskies gain their 20th win for the first time in her ten seasons as the Huskies topped visiting Rolling Meadows 11-1 in five innings on Friday.

The Huskies can (20-7, 10-5) can clinch the Mid-Suburban East with a win at Buffalo Grove on Monday. They lead Elk Grove (20-8, 9-5) by one game with one to play.

"They deserve it (20 wins)," Freeman said. "They're just gamers. They come out every day and grind. They never give up. They have that positive attitude. This team is a coach's dream. They're good softball players but they are really good people, too."

Sophomore Brianna Luciano struck out nine while tossing a 5-hitter.

Makayla Tsagalis homered and went 3-for-4 for the Huskies, the multiple hitters were Hannah Graff (4-for-4), Jackie Bednar (2-for-4) and Luciano (2-for-4).

Elizabeth Elkins (2-for-3), Emily Schmidt (2-for-3) and Amanda Elkins (double) led the offense for Meadows (7-23, 2-13).

Greg Easter Invite: After defeating Batavia 11-2 in its first game of the inaugural Greg Easter Invite, the Fillies had its 21-game winning streak (second longest in program history) snapped by Lyons Township 4-1 in four innings (time limit).

The games are part of the 16-team event which features four teams apiece from Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

Barrington (27-2) will face Marengo at 10:15 a.m. today for its first of two games.

Junior Catherine McMahon (17-1) earned the win over Batavia, throwing the first three innings.

Rachel Krzysko (4-for-4, triple) and Abbey Jacobsen (3-for-3, triple) led the Fillies offense which also received hits from Tori Meyer (double), Sam Murphy (double), Kendall Peterson and Julia Kozar.

In the loss to Lyons, Carly Kordich, Krzysko, Jacobsen and Meyer had Barrington's 4 hits. McMahon came in relief and struck out eighth in 3⅔ innings .

Conant 3, Schaumburg 1: Jackie Carlucci earned the win for the Cougars who were led on offense by Delaney Szwed (2-for-4, double) and Lauren Grzelak (2-for-2, double, RBI).

Makenna McCarthy, Morgan Bihun (double, RBI) and Sara-Kate Pasbrig also had hits for Conant as Schaumburg hosted an awareness game to fight the disease of Lupus.

Kaiden Jackson (3-for-4, double), Michelle Birkholz (2-for-4, double) and Natalie Napier (2-3, double) led the Saxons' offense while Micaela Encarnacion and Summer Schulz also had 1 hit apiece.

Elk Grove 9, Wheeling 3: Winning pitcher Kylie Thomsen (2-for-4), 2 RBI), Sabra Morton (2-for-3, triple, 2 runs), Katia Pendowski (2-for-4, RBI) and Leiliana Rivera (2-for-4, 1 run) led the offense for Elk Grove (20-8, 9-6). Haley Itzenthaler added a double for the Grens while Thomsen struck out six.

Wheeling (2-20, 0-15) was led on offense by freshman Sophia Stanke (3-for-3, double, 1 run), Emmie LaCaeyse (2-for-3) and Becky McAtee, who had a 2-run single. LaCaeyse struck out four.

Buffalo Grove 11, Prospect 7: Jasmine Avalos (3-for-5, home run), Grace Gran (2-for-5), Lauren Beiersdorf (2-for-5), Samantha Hansen (2-for-5, 2 doubles) and Katelyn O'Rourke (2-for-4) led the offense for visiting Buffalo Grove (14-15, 6-9). Alyssa DePhillips earned the win with 3 strikeouts.

Alyssa Cacini (2-for-5, home run), Lauren Caldrone (2-for-4), Jackie Orel (3-for-4), Colleen Palczynski (4-for-4, home run) and Eileen Donohue (3-for-4) were multiple hitters for Prospect (10-12, 5-10).
