Girls track: Cabusao finds silver lining in Antioch sectional

Now that she's headed to state, Jacobs freshman Kyra Cabusao might be going shopping.

"I think I'm going to get throwing shoes, probably," a smiling Cabusao said at rainy Antioch on Wednesday night after qualifying for the Class 3A state meet in the shot put.

Just after the first heat of the 800-meter run in the Antioch sectional, the running events were delayed for more than an hour - not because of the rain, but because the FAT system stopped functioning. When the meet resumed, it was only a few races later that the meet was delayed again due to the faulty FAT. This time, after about a half-hour, the meet was suspended.

It is scheduled to resume at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Antioch is also hosting the Northern Lake County Conference boys track meet, which is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. The boys and girls meets will intertwine until the girls are done. There are still six runnings events - 800 relay, 400 dash, 300 hurdles, 1,600 run, 200 dash and 1,600 relay - that need to be completed.

Cabusao and the other throwers were able to finish in the rain.

Heaving a slippery shot while wearing regular running shoes, Cabusao still unleashed a season-best throw of 38 feet, 3½ inches. That had followed a toss of 33 feet, which was her first of the night.

"All my other throws weren't that good," Cabusao said. "The one throw really got me there. After my first throw, I was mad. I used that to push myself."

An all-around athlete who started for Jacobs' varsity basketball team and even ran the 400-meter relay Wednesday, Cabusao has seen her confidence throwing the shot continue to grow.

"I'm just really excited and pumped (for state)," Cabusao said. "I'm going to try my best to keep pushing and get more and more (distance)."

Huntley captured the top two places in the 100 hurdles thanks to junior Tyra Miller (15.68) and freshman Daryn Davis (15.79). Huntley's McKenzie Krich won the high jump (5-3).

Grant's Ariyona Wallace sped to victory in the 100 dash (12.51). The 3,200 run saw Crystal Lake South senior Caitlin Bruzzini (11:06.17) and Grant sophomore Daniell Osmon (11:08.11) qualify for state. Grant sophomore Eva Cardy (11:08.76) just missed, however.

McHenry freshman Ariel Pala won the 800 (2:32.72) ahead of fellow freshman Eliza Scoggin (2:33.11) of Grant. Both runners advanced to state.

Antioch junior Jill Everett, a former varsity softball player, earned her first state berth by heaving the discus a winning 117 feet, 3 inches.

Cabusao finished second in the shot put to Rockford Auburn senior Alexandria McCoy (40-10.50).
