Softball: Ulrich powers key victory for Lakes

Kelsey Ulrich went 3-for-4 with a double an 2 RBI, and Lakes' softball team pulled out a big, 11-6 win over host Grayslake Central on Tuesday.

With the win, Lakes (10-2 NLCC) is now tied for first place with Antioch in the Northern Lake County Conference, with two conference games remaining for each team. Lakes hosts Antioch on Thursday.

Grayslake Central fell to 9-3 in the NLCC.

Rachel Becker and Georgia Ohren (2 RBI) each went 2-for-4 for Lakes, and Kayla Foote went the distance in the circle for the win.

Elisa Koshy homered, singled and drove in 3 runs for Grayslake Central, and Nicole Buerger was 3-for-4. The Rams also got 2 hits apiece from Morgan Smigielski and Lindsay Brust (double).

Antioch 12, Round Lake 0: The host Sequoits scored 6 runs in each of the first two innings, as they retained their share of first place in the Northern Lake County, winning in five innings.

Ashley Stephens (2-for-2, double, 2 RBI), Carlie Gaylord (2-for-3, double, RBI) and Jackalyn Geraty (2-for-2) led the way offensively for Antioch (20-5, 10-2). Deighton Butenschoen hit a 2-run double, and Hannah Cook had 2 RBI.

Stephanie Bonaguidi (13-1) continued her run of great starts, pitching 1-hit ball over 3 innings. Her 5 strikeouts gave her 94 in 86 innings pitched this season. Cook tossed the final 2 innings.

Round Lake (3-8 NLCC) got 2 hits from Sydney Verastegui.

Grant sweeps North Chicago: Erin Bengston hit her 14th and 15th home runs of the season, as the host Bulldogs won a pair of 3-inning Northern Lake County games by 12-0 finals.

In the first game, Grant (6-5 NLCC) got 2 hits apiece from Bengston (5 RBI), Calista Warmowski (double, triple, 3 RBI), Maddy Nourigat, Megan Chapman and Megan Chapman. Becca Wold doubled.

Chapman pitched a no-hitter in the second game. Taylor Adkins homered. Bengston (triple) and Liz Schram (double, triple, 3 RBI) each had 2 hits. Warmowski and Wold also doubled.

Lake Zurich 9, Stevenson 6: Julia Zaucha homered and singled, and the Bears rallied for 4 runs in the top of the seventh to win the North Suburban game.

Megan Croke (double) and Taylor Zelich also had hits apiece for Lake Zurich (14-11, 8-4), and Jessica Puccinelli was 1-for-2 with a double.

Emma Oriatti hit a 2-run homer for Stevenson (12-15, 3-9), and Alana Labaschin belted a 3-run shot.

Grayslake North 11, Wauconda 8: The Knights won the back-and-forth Northern Lake County game on their home field, where they played as the "away team."

Lauren Olsen hit her second home run of the year and finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI for Grayslake North (12-14, 5-6). Grace Brown finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Freshman call-up Nina Wittig made her first varsity outing count, going 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and adding an outfield assist. Jenna Pozezinski and Carissa Popp collected RBI.

For Wauconda (4-7 NLCC), Mallory Carver hit a 2-run home run in the sixth. She finished 3-for-4. Alex Steffens also finished 3-for-4 (2B, RBI). Sydney Williams (2 RBI) and Alyssa McCarthy each collected 2 hits.

Vernon Hills 5, Deerfield 4: With the Central Suburban League game tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh, the Cougars scored 2 runs.

Delaney Bowen and Tatiana Guletsky (2 doubles, 2 RBI) both went 3-for-4 for Vernon Hills. Jess Salerno had a double, and Sara Lenzi was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI. Winning pitcher Madison Johnson went the distance in the circle, allowing 3 earned runs.

Deerfield got home runs from Jamie Jones and Hannah Wiesnoski.
