Baseball: Perna, Stejskal pitch St. Viator past Notre Dame

St. Viator starter Bobby Perna and reliever Ryan Stejskal were both effective as the Lions' baseball team topped Notre Dame for a second straight day in East Suburban Catholic Conference play Tuesday.

Perna struck out seven and allowed 4 hits in 4 innings, while Stejskal fanned four and allowed 2 hits over the final 3 innings in a 5-0 St. Viator victory.

St. Viator (15-12) was clinging to a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Brett DeSelm had a 2-run single as part of a 4-run inning. Jack Mahoney also had a run-scoring single in the frame.

Bryce Hellgeth had an RBI double as part of his 2-for-3 day at the plate, and Mahoney and DeSelm both had 2 hits.

None of the 4 hits allowed to Notre Dame went for extra bases.

St. Viator is scheduled to meet Prospect in a nonconference varsity game Thursday before a Saturday ESCC doubleheader against Joliet Catholic.

Vernon Hills 14, Maine West 6: The Warriors allowed 7 runs in the first inning and dropped a Central Suburban North game on the road.

Jeff Mustari and Nick Stone had doubles for Maine West (7-16), and Jacob Cabral and Josh Wastyn had 2 hits apiece.
