Softball: Fremd's Mazur belts 17th career homer

By hitting her seventh homer of the season in Fremd's 12-2 five-inning softball win over Hoffman Estates on Monday, Vikings junior Jess Mazur moved into a tie for second place on the school's all-time list for home runs.

And you can bet Jess saw a few of the home runs hit by the player she tied - her sister Michelle, now playing for Georgia Southern.

Fremd's all-time leader is Megan Hubbard, who finished her career with 22.

Also belting a homer for host Fremd (16-5, 10-3) on Monday was Kaylee Goluch.

Multiple hitters for the Vikings were Reagan Schneider (2-fo-r4, 2 doubles), Becca Uhrich (2-for-3, 2 runs), Lexi D'Ambrosio (2-for-4, 2 run), Anna Freveletti (2-for-3, double, RBI) and Grace Stevens (2-for-3, RBI, double) Bella Wojcik also had a double and Anne Marie O'Sullivan collected 3 RBI.

Hannah Ban (4-1) went three innings on the mound and Jess Mazur the final two as Fremd won for the eight time in its last nine games.

Giselle Velazquez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Hoffman (3-17, 2-11).

Palatine 4, Schaumburg 1: Palatine junior Sarah Grossman threw a 6-hitter and raised her record to 11-1 for the host Pirates in the MSL West win.

Maddie Craver (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI), Anna Selleck (1-for-3, double) and Grace Seiffert (1-for-3, RBI) led the offense for the Pirates (19-6, 10-3).

Senior Summer Schulz had a triple for the Saxons (9-11, 7-6)

Elk Grove 9, Buffalo Grove 4: Senior Kylie Thomsen belted her 11th home run and freshman Katia Pendowski (4-for-4) hit her sixth homer to lead the offense for host Elk Grove (19-7, 8-5).

Jessica Kearns was the Grens other multiple hitter, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Teammate Haley Itzenthaler added another double.

Thomsen went all seven innings on the mound, collecting 3 strikeouts while tossing a 6-hitter.

Jasmine Avalos (2-for-3) homered for the Bison (12-15, 4-9) who also received doubles from Katie Fontanetta and Bailey Williams.

Rolling Meadows 5, Wheeling 1: Stephanie Thompson (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Elizabeth Elkins (2-for-4, double, RBI), Amanda Elkins (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense for host Rolling Meadows (7-21, 2-11) in the MSL East. Winning pitcher Lydia Schultz threw a 5-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Senior Kaitlyn Schuetz led Wheeling (2-18, 0-13) by going 2-for-3 while sophomore Becky McAtee belted a two-out solo home run in the top of the sixth.

Hersey 11, Prospect 6: Sophomore Sarah Bailitz retired six straight batters (2 strikeouts) in two innings of relief to earn the win for host Hersey, which remained tied for first with Elk Grove in the MSL East.

The Huskies broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth with 5 runs.

Maddie Flynn (3-for-3), Brianna Luciano (3-for-3, triple), Hannah Graff (2-for-5), Jackie Bednar (2-for-4) and Sophia Cano (2-for-3) led the offense for Hersey.

Colleen Palczcynski (3-for-4), Alex Kanter (2-for-4) and Lauren Caldrone (double) led Prospect (9-11) which received 3 strikeouts from freshman pitcher Claire Doherty.

St. Viator 13, Benet 8: Grace Kaiser (8-4) struck out nine for the win as the visiting Lions (10-8) had home runs from Jenna Breslin, Cece Kaiser and Haley Robinson. Teammate Cam VanValkenburg added a double.

Robinson belted a 2-run homer in the third inning while Breslin connected for a 3-run pinch-hit homer.

Cece Kaiser's 3-run homer sparked a 7-run top of the sixth for the Lions. They added 3 insurance runs in the seventh when VanValkenburg doubled home 2 runs for her third hit of the day. She then scored on the third hit of the day from Robinson (4 RBI).
