Baseball: Bison bounce back, top Plainfield South

Buffalo Grove's baseball team bounced back from a tough Friday loss to Barrington by defeating the high school summer league state champions on Saturday.

The host Bison broke open a tied game by scoring 5 runs in the fifth inning, as singles by Riley Rundquist and John Lundgren and a double from Mac Camardo were the key hits in a 9-2 nonconference victory over Plainfield South.

Camardo doubled twice and finished with 5 RBI. Lundgren drove in 2 runs, and Leo Rule and John Carpinelli scored twice for the Bison (21-2-1).

Carpinelli pitched a complete game, allowing 7 hits with 3 strikeouts.

St. Viator splits with Marist: The visiting Lions first took a 7-2 decision before dropping the second game 9-4 in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

In the first game, the Lions' Casey Kmet, Cole Kmet, Hunter Johnson and John Finnegan had 2 hits apiece, and Jack Mahoney finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. That made a winner of Cole Kmet, who tossed a complete game 4-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

In the second game, Lions pitchers allowed 9 hits and 7 walks as Marist scored 3 runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings. At the plate, Mahoney went 3-for-3, Finnegan was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Casey Kmet had a double.

St. Viator's record stands at 13-12.

Leyden 5, Hinsdale South 4: The visiting Eagles completed a sweep of Hinsdale South in West Suburban Gold play.

Michael Wilms finished 3-for-3 with a double and scored twice for Leyden (14-4), and Josh Cubon drove in 3 runs.

Kevin Nevarez worked 6⅔ innings, allowing 3 earned runs and 6 hits, and Nick Herrera got the final out to earn a save.

Wheeling sweeps: Sean Straub tossed a 5-inning no-hitter as Wheeling's baseball team picked up a 2-0 victory over Lincoln Park in a nonconference matchup.

The Wildcats topped Lincoln Park 6-3 in their first matchup of the day to make it a 2-win Saturday.

Straub walked eight and struck out five and got error-free play from the Wildcats defense. Kevin Pavia drove in both runs for Wheeling with a fourth-inning single.

Zach Yfantis had a double, and Bryan Niznik, Johnny Kappel and Jeremy Kim also had hits for Wheeling (12-13-1).

In the first game, the Wildcats' Jack Splett homered and finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, Brian Maloney went 2-for-3 and scored twice and Andy Shover doubled and drove in 2 runs.

Joey Sineni earned the win in relief as Wheeling came from behind with a 3-run rally in the fifth inning.

Palatine 6, Stevenson 3: Zach Oles doubled twice, finished 2-for-3 with a walk and 2 RBI to help the visiting Pirates notch a non-conference win.

Jack Grochowski contributed a pair of hits, J.T. Streepy had a double and John Weber scored twice for Palatine (14-11).

T.J. Skelnik work the first 5 innings and got the win; Thomas Soby worked 2 innings of scoreless relief.

Michael Marchese homered for Stevenson, and his twin brother Henry had a double.

Prospect 10, Lake Zurich 2: The host Knights produced an 8-run rally in the second inning - all with two outs - which was capped by Ryan Roggeman's 2-run homer to top the visiting Bears in nonconference play.

Mack Malczewski started for the MSL East-leading Knights and nearly got a complete game. He lasted 6⅔ innings and allowed 8 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Big hitters for Prospect (15-8) included Grant Whitebloom (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Frankie Mack (2-for-3).

Maine West 4, Maine South 2: Josh Wastyn had a run-scoring single in the second inning and finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to help Maine West pick up a Central Suburban League crossover win against their district rival.

Sam Kindle pitched 6 strong innings and got the win for Maine West (7-15). He struck out 10 while allowing 5 hits and 2 unearned runs.

Wastyn pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Warriors, who got doubles from Jeff Mustari and Matty Mustari.

Cary-Grove 6, Elk Grove 1: The visiting Grenadiers couldn't get much going against Tommy Neilsen, who yielded 4 singles and struck out five in a complete-game victory in nonconference play.

Ryne Singsank, Austin Brown, A.J. Navarro and Ryan Uehara had the hits for Elk Grove (11-13).

Tinley Park 15, Conant 3 (5 inn.): Mason Sykes accounted for all the scoring for the Cougars (8-17) with a 3-run homer in the first inning, but visiting Tinley Park came up with 21 hits to claim a nonconference win.

Libertyville 5, Hoffman Estates 4: The visiting Hawks fell behind 4-0 after the third inning and managed to tie it the top of the seventh before the Wildcats won it with a two-out steal of home in the bottom of the frame.

Dakota Slingerland had 2 hits for the Hawks (7-13), and Nick Grybos, Josh Magers, Lucas Barnes and Dylan Bloom each drove in a run.

Rockton Hononegah 7, Hersey 4: Tyler Haffey hit a 2-run homer in the sixth and the host Huskies scored twice more in the seventh, but it wasn't quite enough to catch the visitors in nonconference action.

James Denten drove in the other 2 runs for Hersey (6-17-1) in the seventh inning.

Starter Hunter Luke (4 IP) and reliever Denten (3 IP) allowed a combined 5 hits, but Hersey committed 7 errors and allowed 5 unearned runs.

Fremd splits: Luke Seidel scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Fremd earned a 2-1 victory over host Warren in the second game of their nonconference doubleheader.

Mitchell Schroll started for Fremd (13-12) and allowed no hits and no runs through 5 innings. Ashton Statz relieved and got the win after 3 relief innings.

In the first game, the Vikings fell 8-6. Josh Kraus had a couple of hits and drove in 3 runs, Tommy Josten had a double and Alec Honickel went 3-for-4.
