Girls soccer: Deerfield's fast start leads to win over Maine West

Twenty-four hours after putting 7 goals on the scoreboard against Wheeling on Monday, Maine West's girls soccer team turned around and conceded eight in an 8-1 loss to Deerfield in a Central Suburban North contest in Des Plaines in Tuesday.

The trio of Chloe Cappas, Samantha Linn and Haley Emory were the power in Deerfield's strike force Tuesday as they had a hand in all 5 goals before intermission to help get the Warriors (8-6-2, 2-2-0) off to a flying start.

"We were not very good against Glenbrook North two weeks ago," said Linn, whose double in four minutes increased the Deerfield advantage to 4-0. "But we've worked hard since then in our communication, both on and off the field, and I think we've all seen the difference in our team since then."

Maine West coach Jeff Bishop said his team did not have a sharp start in its win over Wheeling on Monday.

"But I'm at a loss as to why we came out so flat tonight when we all knew we were facing a very good team, which had the talent and players who could take advantage of us coming out flat," he said.

Cappas got the visitors out to a promising start when she found the opener at 9 minutes.

She added another five minutes later when some marvelous ball movement by freshmen Malori Killoren and Erin Rosenzweig sprung her free.

Linn rattled the underside of the bar with a wicked strike that fell over the end line at 31 minutes.

She followed that up when a wonderfully-paced early ball by Marissa Hyland put the junior in on keeper Gabri Faraone, who deserved a better fate on a night when she made a handful of valiant reaction saves.

Deerfield continued its offensive onslaught courtesy of a third goal from Cappas at 40 minutes.

Julia Deac dashed the hopes of a shutout for the visitors when the Maine West (4-9-1, 0-4-0) senior pulled one back to make it 6-1.

But goals from Hyland and Killoren just after the hour mark added to Bishop's frustration.

"I told the girls they have to decide to come out right off the opening whistle and play with a lot of desire and energy," he said. "It's up to them to do so each and every night. There's talent on this roster but we've got to get over this soon."
