Boys volleyball: Glenbard East remains undefeated in UEC with win vs. St. Charles North

Having a 6-0 record in the Upstate Eight Conference is nice, but Glenbard East isn't about to celebrate just yet.

"We still have four more matches to play in the conference, and we're just going to go into every game trying to play our game and let the chips fall where they may," coach Marci Maier said of her 20-5 Rams. " ... We're fortunate to be where we are right now, but we still have West Chicago, and we've got some other good teams to play too."

Still, the Rams took a big step toward a boys volleyball league title with a 25-20, 25-20 victory against a strong St. Charles North team Tuesday in Lombard.

"We're going into the rest of the conference (schedule) pretty confident," Rams senior Justin Murphy said. "We've beaten some of our toughest opponents yet. So we've got to keep the momentum going and take care of the teams left. Just take care of business, really."

The Rams took care of business at the end of both games, each of which was close. Game 1 featured 12 ties and 7 lead changes before the Rams took the lead for good at 16-15 and quickly went ahead by 4.

"It's been like this all season," North Stars coach Todd Weimer said. "We're up on Downers South, we're up on Stevenson, we're up on Wheaton Warrenville South. We're up on all these schools."

In Game 2 the North Stars (10-14, 3-3) took a 3-point lead early, but they couldn't sustain it. After another 12 ties and 7 lead changes, the Rams took the lead for good at 20-19 and finished strong, with Adrian Cebula's three consecutive aces a major factor.

"We just took advantage when we could, and we had a few big plays there to push us over the edge and got us going right there," Rams senior Mason Arnold said.

"We see a lot of positives," Weimer added. "We see a lot of good things. Things like we haven't seen that yet or a block here or an attack here. We haven't seen jump serving like we did tonight."
