Girls soccer: Another winning feat for unbeaten Wauconda

Wauconda has put its foot down in becoming the leader in the Northern Lake County Conference in girls soccer.

They Bulldogs are also the only unbeaten team in the area after raising their record to 12-0-1, including 4-0 in the NLCC with conference games remaining against Round Lake, Grant and Grayslake Central.

The most recent footprint for Wauconda? A 4-2 victory over host Grayslake North on Thursday night.

Megan Sinnott scored twice, Kayla Wisniewski had a goal and an assist and Morgan Lung knocked in the other Bulldogs goal.

"We've been preaching it for the last week in a half or so, just trying to be more dynamic in the final third," Wauconda coach Beau Shogren said. "Over the last couple of games, we've been a little flat in the offensive end. But we've been working and working on it in practice, and today they just came through tenaciously.

"We're just so proud the way this game started and the way we made a statement early, on the attacking side of it. This was a big win for us."

The Bulldogs came out with 3 goals in the first half against Grayslake North (8-4-2, 3-1). Sinnott started the barrage five minutes in.

"It was just a lot of determination," said Sinnott, who now has 11 goals. "When I see the ball that close and I'm so close to it ... I just work that hard for it, and I really want to put it into the back of the net. I just want to out-tough everybody and play my game."

Lung scored the second goal off a pass from Wisniewski in the 24th minute for a 2-0 Bulldogs advantage.

Sinnott got her second goal after taking a pass from Savannah Johnson, making it 3-0 in the 36th minute.

"I really think that we have a team that works so good with one another," Sinnott said. "We have a lot of great girls with a lot of great potential. We seem to work really well together."

Wisniewski added her 16th goal of the season (and the 51st of her three-year varsity career) off an assist from Rachel DoNovo in the 65th minute for a Wauconda 4-0 lead.

Grayslake North got goals in the final eight minutes from Sydney Paez and Maddie Kubas.

"(Wauconda) just played better then us," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "They scored the three goals, they were quicker and more aggressive. We paid the price."

On Thursday, Wauconda given the No. 2 seed and Grayslake North the No. 4 in the upcoming Class 2A sectional.

"It was a great compliment by the other teams," Shogren said. "I'm glad that they recognized us. It was no doubt that Prairie Ridge is No. 1 - they have a great argument to make, and we couldn't argue against it. We'll take it and be happy with it. We can't underestimate 3,4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. It's just one of those sectionals to be ready for anybody."
