Baseball: Lopez, Leone help Elk Grove past Palatine

Elk Grove's Joe Lopez produced an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the host Grens past Palatine 5-4 on Friday in Mid-Suburban League baseball.

Lopez also homered and finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.

Zach Schwartz went 2-for-3 with a double and Xander Rojahn doubled and scored to help Elk Grove pick up its first MSL victory.

Joe Leone pitched the full 7 innings for Elk Grove (5-10, 1-5). He allowed 6 hits and struck out six.

Brent Penrose had quite a game for Palatine (9-8, 4-2), finishing 3-for-3 with a solo homer and 2 doubles.

Fremd 17, Wheeling 9: In a game loaded with crooked numbers, Fremd had the edge.

The visiting Vikings got 4 RBI apiece from Tommy Josten, Will McCabe and Alec Honickel, and reliever Tom Narey earned the win after Wheeling got all of its scoring in the first three innings.

Luke Seidel and Zach Goodman both doubled twice for Fremd (7-9, 3-3), which finished with 14 hits and won its second straight MSL game. Eric Bennes (3-for-4) and Honickel both had 3 hits.

Andy Shover finished 3-for-4 with 2 doubles for Wheeling, and Kyle Bullock and Brian Maloney had 2 hits apiece as the Wildcats (8-7-1, 5-1) suffered their first MSL loss.

Rolling Meadows 9, Conant 7: The host Mustangs had jumped ahead 9-2 after a 5-run second inning and a 4-run third, then managed to stay ahead despite three consecutive innings of multiple-run scoring by Conant.

Leadoff man Justin Thompson finished 2-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI to pace the effort for Rolling Meadows (2-12, 1-5). Ryan Lane drovein 2 runs, Nate Pardini had a hit and drew 2 walks, and Donnie Mrofcza, Marco Perez and Brandon Janowicz drove in 1 run apiece.

Frank Storniolo earned the win in relief.

Leadoff man Tyler Hedmen finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI for Conant (6-10, 2-4), which out-hit Meadows 10-8. Tim Fauth (2 RBI) and C.J. DeShazer both had 2 hits.

Hersey 9, Schaumburg 8: The host Huskies overcame the 6 errors they committed along with 11 hits from the Saxons, whose 2-run rally in the seventh inning came up 1 run short.

Tyler Haffey doubled, drove in 3 runs and also scored 3 runs for Hersey (5-9-1, 2-4), which had 6 hits but took advantage of 5 errors by Schaumburg (5-11, 0-6).

Jack Lancaster had a big day at the plate for the Saxons, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Nick Calip (double) and Tyler Fredrickson both came up with 2 hits for Schaumburg.

Starter Quinn Gudaitis earned the win after tossing 4 innings, and Jake Irwin got the final three outs to pick up a save.

Buffalo Grove 10, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): The host Bison got their bats going early, scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 5 in the second on their way to an MSL victory.

Riley Rundquist finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for the Bison, and Mac Camardo also had 2 hits to make a winner of John Lundgren, who limited the Hawks to 4 hits while striking out eight without a walk.

Buffalo Grove improved to 12-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the MSL after winning its sixth straight.

Christian Liberty 14, Kirkland Hiawatha 10: Mark Cabrera had a double and the Chargers bashed out 11 hits to make a winner of pitcher sophomore Nathan Stenzel.
