Girls soccer: Wisniewski, Wauconda still unbeaten after topping Antioch

Off to another outstanding start, Wauconda's unbeaten girls soccer team leads the Northern Lake County Conference.

The most recent evidence of Wauconda's strength is Tuesday's 3-0 victory over host Antioch.

Kayla Wisniewski scored a goal and assisted on another. Erica Miller and Abigail McHugh also scored, with Rachel DeNovo and Olivia Kuch both getting assists.

"We'll take this result, and its been a game we've been looking forward to all season," said Wauconda coach Beau Shogren, whose team improved to 8-0-1.

The Bulldogs knew coming in it would be a competitive contest with Antioch (7-3-2, 0-1).

"I'm happy with the way we came out and we settled into it," Shogren said. (Antioch) came out pretty aggressive and put some pressure on us early. But we responded, settled into our game and took care of it."

Wisniewski, a junior, has made big strides each season, starting with her freshman year. And she's definitely become a difference-maker up top for the Bulldogs.

"I love soccer and constantly trying to get better," Wisniewski said. "We might be young, but we've got a lot of skill and we should be good."

Wisniewski opened the scoring by taking a pass from DeNovo, then darted around a Sequoits defender and scored her 12th goal of the season in the 16th minute.

In the 36th minute, Wisniewski drew much of the attention in the box and sent a pass over to teammate Miller, who scored for a 2-0 Bulldogs advantage.

Wauconda connected once more as McHugh scored in the 44th minute off a pass from Kuch.

Antioch, too, has made progress this season. But Wauconda posed some challenges the Sequoits weren't ready to meet.

"We struggle against good, athletic, stronger teams," Antioch coach Marni Polakow said. "I don't want to take anything away from (Wauconda). Some of our losses haven't been against more technical teams, and (Wauconda) was more athletic than us. I do know that we work hard."
