Boys volleyball: Palatine wins at Schaumburg; Hersey protects East lead

Palatine's boys volleyball team earned a Mid-Suburban West victory in a close one Tuesday as the visiting Pirates prevailed 25-22, 28-26 at Schaumburg.

Johnny O'Shea (9 kills) and Matt Cooper (5) led the attack, while Ben Rinella had 14 setting assists.

Palatine's Bryant Smith contributed 4 kills on 7-for-7 hitting, while teammate Camden Hill had 3 blocks and Matt Weltzien had 5 digs.

Hersey d. Prospect: The MSL East leaders protected their advantage by topping the visiting Knights 25-18, 25-15.

Jake Mailloux (10-for-12 hitting, 7 kills) and Camran Saeed (5 kills) and Patrick O'Brien (5 kills) led the attack for Hersey (12-1, 5-0).

Justin Hong provided 2 aces on 6-for-6 serving along with 10 digs, Vince Reisel had 21 setting assists and Joe Nugent and O'Brien both had 2 blocks.

Wheeling d. Rolling Meadows: Host Wheeling picked up a tough decision, prevailing 25-21, 18-25, 25-17.

Jared Moser had a team-high 10 kills and Michael Best and Michael Lechowicz had 7 apiece for Wheeling (12-10, 3-2).

Sono Tsogtbaatar led the Wildcats with 19 assists, while Kyle Bagarella generated 11 assists and 3 digs and Matt Schiferl had a team-high 14 digs.

Arthur Barczak led the Meadows attack with 7 kills and also had 3 blocks. Marc Quezada had a team-high 13 digs and Joe Tunzi provided 12 setting assists. The Mustangs also got strong serving efforts from Kyle Kornblum (17-for-17, 1 ace), Quezada (10-10) and Tunzi (8-8).

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: The Bison bounced back from their first MSL East loss last week with a convincing 25-15, 25-17 victory over the Grens.

Ian Van Wazer (12-for-13 hitting, 6 kills) led the attack and was also 12-for-12 on serve.

Chris Tsourmas, Danny Zickert and Tyler Stejskal each had 4 kills for the Bison; Tsourmas also finished 10-for-10 serving.

Leading the Elk Grove effort were Kevin Doyle (15-for-18 hitting, 7 kills), Kevin Braceros (5 kills, 6-for-6 serving, 5 digs), Ed Gonzalez (11 assists) and Luke Augustaitis (5 digs, 2 blocks).

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: The visiting Vikings got a big effort from Aaron Peterson (12 kills on 18-for-23 hitting) in a 25-11, 25-21 victory over the Hawks.

Jacob Peterson (11 assists) and Kaleb Scharman (10) led the setting effort, and Rocco Stella had 2 blocks along with 2 kills. Martin Michalski finished with 4 kills as Fremd improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the MSL West.

Among the top contributors for Hoffman Estates were Khalil Greaves (4 kills, 3 blocks), Miguel Pineda (2 kills, 3-for-4 serving with 1 ace) and J.D. Lynch (3 kills).

Barrington d. Conant: Michael O'Toole came up with 11 kills and Josh Babicz had 6 as the Broncos stayed perfect in the MSL West with a 25-16, 25-16 decision.

Evan Carroll provided 21 assists along with a team-high 5 blocks for Barrington, while Stephen Wanca contributed 13 digs and Justin Hill served up 3 aces.
