Softball: Falkstrom powers Carmel's sweep

Karina Falkstrom homered in each game, as Carmel Catholic's softball team opened East Suburban Catholic Conference action with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Marian Catholic, 6-4 and 8-1, Monday.

Falkstrom hit a 3-run homer in the opener, while winning pitcher Sydney Schuda allowed 1 earned run and 6 hits, struck out three and walked three. Marla Walinski was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI, and Lauren Caffarelli went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

In the second game, the Corsairs also got home runs from Jennifer Giesey, Walinski and Jordan Swiatkowski in improving to 11-4. Swiatkowski finished 4-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Giesey was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Walinski went the distance in the circle, allowing just 4 hits.

Grant 7, Johnsburg 6: Liz Schram's walk-off double in the seventh rallied the Bulldogs in the nonconference game.

Trailing 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, Erin Bengston doubled. She scored on Megan Mitchell's single, before Schram's heroics lifted Grant to its 11th win in 13 games this season.

Antioch 5, Vernon Hills 4: Megan Lawrence's 2-run double with one out in the top of the seventh rallied the Sequoits in the nonconference game.

Annie Wagner (3-for-3, stolen base), Ashley Stephens and Avery Malicki (2-for-4, stolen base) all singled with one out ahead of Lawrence's at-bat to load the bases. Piper Foote was 2-for-4 for Antioch (8-1). Hannah Cook pitched 3⅔ innings in relief and earned the win.

Vernon Hills' Mackenzie Mahler hit a solo homer in the sixth to put the Cougars in front 4-3. Mahler, Nicole Pieper (double) and Meg Finerty each had 2 hits for the Cougars.

Libertyville 6, Mundelein 2: Winning pitcher Hannah Heraty improved to 10-2 on the season with 8 strikeouts in 7 innings.

Lyndsey Lyon had 3 hits while Sam Hilldale and Maggie Evers finished with 2 hits apiece.

Libertyville is now 12-2 on the season and 4-0 in North Suburban Conference action.

Deerfield 17, Grayslake North 7: Deerfield rolled up 14 hits on Grayslake North.

Becca Sosa had 2 hits, incuding a home run and a double and also drove in 3 runs for Grayslake North.

Jenna Pozezinski added 3 hits and drove in 2 runs.

Faith Standerski had 2 doubles for the Knights.

Lake Zurich 9, Stevenson 2: Elizabeth Chidldikas had 4 hits and Jessica Puccinelli, Amanda Guercio and Abby Jokast each had 2 hits to lead Lake Zurich.

Winning pitcher Stephanie Keefe rolled up 8 strikeouts over seven innings.

Saturday's results:

Grayslake Central sweeps Highland Park: On Saturday, Elisa Koshy homered twice and went 4-for-4 to lead the Rams to an 18-4 win in Game 1 of the nonconference doubleheader. Lexi Waigand was 4-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Brooke Heraty (homer), Nicole Warren (double), Reagen Radke (double) and Breanna Albert each had 2 hits.

The Rams won the second game 16-8, as Kristy Heerdegen was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Grace Bradley and Zoey Styczen each had 2 hits, Nicole Buerger homered and Koshy doubled.

Stevenson 6, Niles North 3: On Saturday, the Patriots picked up their third victory, as Ilyssa Muise went the distance in what coach Perry Wilhelm called "our best pitched game of the year."

Alana Labaschin hit a 2-run homer and had 3 RBI to lead Stevenson's 10-hit attack. After giving up a 2-run homer in the first inning, Muise allowed only 1 run the last 6 innings. She struck out seven, walking only two, while scattering 8 hits. Stevenson's infield turned 2 double plays.

Marengo 9, Warren 5: On Saturday, Erika Jimenez went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for the Blue Devils in their nonconference loss to the Indians (13-2), who rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Caitlyn Britton (2 RBI) and Kelly Beck both doubled for Warren.

Lake Zurich splits with McHenry: On Saturday, the Bears split their nonconference doubleheader.

Amanda Guercio's walk-off, 2-run homer (her eighth of the season) in the bottom of the eighth lifted Lake Zurich to a 5-3 win in Game 1. Guercio finished 3-for-4, Jessica Puccinelli was 2-for-4, and Julianna Hood earned the complete-game win in the circle.

The Bears lost the second game 15-4, despite Sarah Schnecker's grand slam, single and 5 RBI. Elizabeth Chialdikas was 2-for-3 for Lake Zurich (7-6).
