Special seed giveaway launches Plant a Row
By Catherine Edman Daily Herald Staff Writer

When you're struggling to make ends meet, putting food on the table can be a real challenge.

The unexpected arrival of fresh vegetables can make a world of difference.

The Daily Herald wants to help deliver that assistance through the Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign, and area garden centers, along with several companies are joining in our push to do that.

For the next month, through June 2, we'll pass out free packets of vegetable seeds, donated by Ball Horticultural Corp. of West Chicago, at participating suburban garden centers. We'll also pass out packages of sterile, soilless mix donated by Fafard Inc. that you can use to start the seeds.

We've set a goal this year of raising 40,000 pounds of fresh, home-grown produce to deliver to area food pantries and soup kitchens.

Our hope is that you'll use the free seeds we're providing to help us meet that goal.

In addition to providing the seeds, Ball also provided several prizes we'll award at each garden center to one lucky gardener. Anyone who requests the seed packets will need to fill out a participation form and drop it in a box that's available at the garden center.

On June 2, at each garden center, we'll draw one name, then award one Dragon Wing begonia, a free Dragon Wing T-shirt and a Dragon Wing carrying bag per store.
