20th Century high school champs
The high school sports champs of the 20th century include, not surprisingly, some schools that have been around for the better part of 100 years. Others have owned one sport. Here are the four Northwest suburban schools with double-digit championships: 1. Palatine High School: 16 state titles, including six in girls cross country ('89, '90, '91, '92, '95, '96); four in girls badminton ('85, '86, '89, '91); two each in girls gymnastics ('88, '89) and girls soccer ('89, '95) and one each in boys soccer ('94) and girls bowling ('92). 2. Fremd High School: 14 state championships, including a great run of nine girls gymnastics titles in the past two decades ('85, '86, '87, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, '99); boys soccer ('84, '97); boys swimming ('94, '95) and boys cross country ('69). 3. Arlington High School: Won 13 state titles before closing in 1984. Five in boys gymnastics ('55, '59, '60, '68, '69); five in girls badminton ('77, '78, '79, '80, '81); boys cross country ('67); boys golf ('56) and boys tennis ('64). 4. Maine East High School: Has won 13 titles since opening in 1930, five in boys swimming ('32, '34, '35, '36, '37); baseball ('58, '59); boys cross country ('70, '79); Boys track and field ('41, '46); boys gymnastics ('79) and girls gymnastics ('77). Other Northwest suburban schools and the number of their state titles: 7 titles: Hersey High School, Schaumburg High School 5 titles: Wheeling High School 4 titles: Glenbard North High School; Loyola Academy 3 titles: Conant High School; Forest View High School (closed in '86); Lake Park High School; Leyden East High School; Maine West High School 2 titles: Barrington High School; Buffalo Grove High School; Carmel High School; Elgin High School; Stevenson High School 1 title: Elk Grove High School; Hoffman Estates High School; Prospect High School; Rolling Meadows High School; Streamwood High School.
