Though the impact of new federal health care guidelines remains unclear, College of DuPage officials say they're planning to provide benefits to some part-time professors. The college will create the new position of "lecturer" — a nontenured adjunct faculty member who will teach more classes than the average adjunct professor, but still fewer classes than a full-time professor. The new designation would allow lecturers to be eligible for health care insurance, officials said.

Itasca Elementary District 10 officials are pursuing plans to eliminate some middle school programs next year, despite tens of thousands of dollars in community donations and a much lower-than-expected budget deficit for this year. The tentative decision to cut seventh-grade Spanish, family and consumer science and a media center director at F.E. Peacock Middle School came Wednesday night during a marathon school board meeting. A final vote still must be taken to make the changes official.

The Mineola Hotel in Fox Lake recently was named to the 2013 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list by Landmarks Illinois, a not for profit group. Supporters hope the designation rekindles interest in the local landmark, which was built in 1884 by members of the Chicago Board of Trade as a private clubhouse and then converted to a hotel.

Local officials Saturday welcomed President Barack Obama action declaring suburban counties hit by heavy flooding last month federal disaster areas, saying it will help the recovery. "There are many of our residents who don't even have flood insurance, and this is going to help them out," said Lisle Mayor Joe Broda. "We were keeping our fingers crossed that we would, in fact, qualify because it's really going to aid our folks in moving forward."
