Two-year-old Ryan Shaffer sat on the ice in his new skates after falling down. Then ice skating instructor Karen Kay Lavris talked to him with loving encouragement and, after several tries, he got back up on his skates, made his way across the ice and gave Lavris a big hug. "I love the children, I love every part of teaching them and seeing them smile," said Lavris. "It's magic. To see a little girl or a little boy get on the ice is a magical thing."

Trevor Ray held a small bundle of gift-wrapped goodies baked by Stephanie Rowells, wife of Lakes boys track coach Kurt Rowells, when a competitor stopped by to feed the speedy senior some sugary praise. It was none other than Ray's old middle-school relay teammate, Leroy Chapman of Antioch. "Mention that he beat me," Chapman said with a smile, as he patted Ray on the shoulders and back. "Smoked me." Chapman, who finished second to Ray in the 400-meter dash, wasn't the only one blown away by a Lakes runner. If this were a high school baseball game, it would have been called after five innings. Lakes piled up 144 points to capture Friday night's Class 2A Vernon Hills sectional. Defending sectional champ Grayslake Central (76 points) was way back in second. Vernon Hills (69), Antioch (52) and St. Viator (36) rounded out the top five.

Host Stevenson was rolling in the deep end of the pool Friday night in the second half of the Patriots' boys state water polo state quarterfinal game against Conant. The Cougars proved that their sparkling 30-3 record heading into the state tournament was for real as they led 2-1 after one quarter before the Pats rallied back to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The very close and evenly matched back-and-forth battle wound up being tied at 6-6 on a breakaway goal by Conant's Jon Burke with 4:12 left in the third quarter. But Stevenson (22-9-1) and goalie Rob O'Brien played shutout defense the rest of the way as 5 goals by junior Mitchell Sokolsky paved the way to a 9-6 Patriots victory.
