"I kill my competition. That's my job." That was Tom Diamond, the owner of Fountain Blue banquet facility in Des Plaines, six years ago defending his opposition to a Kildeer banquet hall's plans for a permanent outdoor tent near his home. Now it's Diamond seeking, and receiving, approval for an outdoor tent against the wishes of area residents.

Nine students will walk across the stage Sunday at Lewis University's commencement ceremony to receive bachelor's degrees in criminal justice. Yet, these students never took classes at the school's campus in Romeoville. Through a so-called 3+1 program partnership between Lewis and College of DuPage, the students earned their four-year degrees from Lewis by taking all their classes at COD's campus in Glen Ellyn.

Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson

Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much isn't: it worked on Friday for Fobbe. His first throw in the prelims was the best he has ever thrown the shot. The loud grunt was accompanied by an equally loud thud as the shot landed 56 feet, 7 inches from the ring. Another personal best throw marked an improvement of 10 feet over the last two weeks and a spot in the finals with the second-best toss from prelims.

A Stevenson High School teacher will officiate the wedding of two students who met in his class more than a decade ago. "In sociology I teach a lot about a concept called sociological mindfulness, which is realizing all the ways that each of us has an influence on the world, and this is a great example of that," Chris Salituro said.
