Students rushing to class at College of DuPage may have been in such a hurry that they missed it: an 8-foot bronze sculpture of a chaparral has been installed on the school's Glen Ellyn campus. The chaparral, also known as a roadrunner, isn't common to Illinois, but it has been the COD mascot since the school's founding in 1967 when students hustled to and from 40 various leased classroom sites throughout DuPage County.

South Elgin baseball victories tend to follow a formula: close games characterized by excellent starting pitching and just enough run support. The Storm adhered to that formula Friday in a 2-0 upset of No. 5 Glenbard North (19-12) in a Class 4A Wheaton North regional semifinal. No. 11 South Elgin (18-14) scored 2 first-inning runs and junior right-hander Ryan Nutof shut out the Panthers on 5 hits.

In the preliminaries of the 119th boys state track meet Friday at Eastern Illinois University, the sophomore reached Saturday's finals of both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. It helped the three-time defending Class 3A champion Lancers send 11 qualifiers into Saturday's finals, four more than Lyons Twp. and O'Fallon and one more than 2012 runner-up Edwardsville. Wheaton North, Naperville Central and York each advanced four events.

The village board Monday approved final plans for construction of two aboveground reservoirs in Armstrong Park and a siphon that will release stormwater to a downstream point in Klein Creek. The project is being coordinated by DuPage County, but a 2011 intergovernmental agreement stipulates that final plans be approved by the village and park district. The park board gave its approval in February.
