Is the media hype on H1N1 over emphasized? In my opinion, yes. According to the statistics, 36,000 people die a year caused by the regular seasonal influenza, when 4,100 have died so far due to the swine flu.

Understandably, many investors are elated to see the stock market rally and increase the value of their investments. But if we take a look at the underlying indicators, those indicative of a robust and growing economy, the optimism is not supported by the reality of our financial foundations.

There is talk of another Stimulus Package. Here we go again, borrowing from China and adding to the national debt. This is a country living on credit as a way of life, both individually and nationally. Who will benefit? When will we learn?

I just received my second installment property tax bill and it was up almost 10 percent over last year. The surprise was that the increase in the Cook County taxes portion was up only 2 percent while my school tax portion for Harper, Dist. 54 and Dist. 211 was up over 10 percent.

Two Delta/Northwest pilots were distracted and flew past their designated airport at about 500 miles per hour, and in ten to fifteen minutes overshot the runway by about 150 miles (no one got hurt and no accident occurred). So the FAA has revoked their license to fly.

In August our government announced the policy regarding H1N1 vaccinations. This new policy which is now in effect does not provide shots for those in the 64 and older age group because the government says they are less likely to contract the disease.

There is a basic flaw in comparing Chicago and suburban school scores. The Chicago high schools are presently segregated based on innate test scoring ability. Magnet high schools such as Walter Payton and Northside Prep admit only naturally-high-scoring students.
