Mike Spellman started out reporting on Little League baseball games for the Daily Herald as a freelancer in the era between typewriters and second-generation computers. In the subsequent 20+ years at the newspaper, he has covered such events as The Masters, the U.S. Open, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Finals, the Arlington Million, and the Breeders’ Cup. This fall he will add the Ryder Cup to the list. For those old enough to remember, when you think of Mike’s job description, think Paul Popovich.

In addition to his event coverage, Mike also has a weekly column called, appropriately enough, Spellman’s Scorecard, and during the football season he tries to amuse and get people talking with his post-game Bears Bites.

In his free time, Mike enjoys golfing, horse racing – especially the morning workouts at Arlington Park – reading, borderline intensive workouts (in other words, walking), and about five times a year he celebrates completing the New York Times Sunday crossword.

Spellman Scorecard: Bears don’t know how good they have it

Nov 19 2014 | 9:31 pm - The circus trip. It’s always sounded daunting, but lately that simply hasn’t been the case for the Blackhawks. In fact, the Hawks have thrived on this two-week trek, going 22-11-4 since 2007, including a 6-1 mark last season.

Spellman: Hawks' voice Foley gets place in Hall

Nov 16 2014 | 6:00 am - There are no guarantee that Pat Foley won't whip out the “Bannnnnerman” call Monday in Toronto when, after 31 years of calling Blackhawks games, he'll receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting and finally take his place...

Spellman Bites: Yeah, Bears won the game, but ...

Nov 16 2014 | 8:27 pm - Yeah they finally won at home. Yeah they beat a (weak) division foe. Yeah the defense didn’t give up 50 points. But in the big picture, the win doesn’t mean a thing except a lower spot in the draft.
