Mike Spellman started out reporting on Little League baseball games for the Daily Herald as a freelancer in the era between typewriters and second-generation computers. In the subsequent 20+ years at the newspaper, he has covered such events as The Masters, the U.S. Open, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Finals, the Arlington Million, and the Breeders’ Cup. This fall he will add the Ryder Cup to the list. For those old enough to remember, when you think of Mike’s job description, think Paul Popovich.

In addition to his event coverage, Mike also has a weekly column called, appropriately enough, Spellman’s Scorecard, and during the football season he tries to amuse and get people talking with his post-game Bears Bites.

In his free time, Mike enjoys golfing, horse racing – especially the morning workouts at Arlington Park – reading, borderline intensive workouts (in other words, walking), and about five times a year he celebrates completing the New York Times Sunday crossword.
