Mundelein residents object to gas station proposal

Daily Herald Report

Several Mundelein residents have written to village officials to complain about a developer's plan to build a Thorntons gas station and convenience store at the northeast corner of routes 176 and 45.

The current buildings on the land - the Original Omega Restaurant and an unused building just to the north - would be demolished. The village board informally told the company to move ahead with its plans following a presentation last month.

But during Monday's board meeting, several emails and letters from people opposed to the plan were read into the record. They raised concerns about leaky underground gasoline tanks, noise and light pollution and its potential use by semitrailer trucks, among other issues.

The developers want to break ground in summer 2021 and open the station in 2022.
