Recycling event for electronics, other hard-to-recycle items planned for Saturday in Lake in the Hills

This Saturday is the day to recycle those old electronics that have been gathering dust in your basement, as well as a variety of other items that you can't throw in your recycling bin.

The McHenry County Department of Health will host an electronic recycling event for county residents 9 a.m. to noon at Chesak Elementary School, 10910 Reed Road in Lake in the Hills, according to a news release.

Anyone who wishes to take part in the event will be asked to place their items in their trunk and remain in their cars to maintain social distancing, solid waste manager Kelli Boeckmann said in the release.

The event will be held in coordination with Elgin Recycling, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Paper Tiger Shredding.

The following items can be recycled: TVs and computer monitors (fee applies), computers, laptops and tablets, keyboards, mice, printers, fax machines, scanners, small scale servers, DVD players, DVD recorders, VCRs and video game consoles.

The event also will accept electronic keyboards, portable digital music players, digital converter boxes, cable and satellite receivers, according to the release.

Fluorescent tubes can be recycled for a cost of 50 cents to $1 each. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County also will collect clean polystyrene foam, packing peanuts, reusable Bubble Wrap and cloth items, such as clothing, linens, rags and shoes.

With the help of Paper Tiger Shredding, residents can securely shred paper documents on site, for free. All documents must be taken out of 3-ring binders or binder clips, but paper clips and staples do not need to be removed, according to the release.

The fee to recycle TVs and computer monitors is $15 for LCD monitors, $25 for all other units 20 inches or smaller and $35 for 21 inches or longer, according to the release. Credit cards or cash will be accepted for payment.

Another recycling event similar to this one will be 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 at McHenry County College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake.

Residents also can visit Elgin Recycling directly at 5114 East Terra in Crystal Lake to recycle electronics and other items. Elgin Recycling is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
