Police: Teens shot at Gurnee homeowner when caught breaking into car

A pair of Lake County teens face multiple felony charges stemming from allegations they fired gunshots at a Gurnee homeowner who caught them breaking into a vehicle early Thursday, police said.

Ian F. Matus, 18, of Gurnee, was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and burglary, according to police.

Maseo B. Rosser, 19, of Zion, turned himself in to authorities the same day. Rosser is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and burglary, police said.

The arrests stem from an investigation Gurnee police launched after officers were called to the 900 block of Ralph Avenue shortly after midnight Thursday on a report of shots fired at a homeowner who caught two men in the middle of a car burglary.

According to police, the homeowner was alerted by a Ring doorbell system and looked outside to see two people going through the interior of a vehicle parked in the driveway.

The homeowner opened the front door and yelled for the offenders to leave the property, police said. While the offenders were running away, police said, they shot two rounds toward the homeowner.

No one was injured, but two bullet holes later were located in the exterior of the home, according to police.

The homeowner assisted investigators by retrieving the Ring video, which captured the two burglars, both wearing face masks, breaking into the vehicle, police said. Investigators compared the footage with surveillance video from other recent break-ins and obtained arrest warrants for the suspects, police said.

Matus remains in custody at the Lake County jail on $75,000 bail pending a July 21 court date. Rosser is in the jail on $125,000 bail. No court date has been scheduled for him, according to court records.
