Cook County detainee coronavirus cases up to 38

Now 38 detainees at the Cook County jail have tested positive for COVID-19, Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart announced Friday.

Dart said that as of 5 p.m., 167 detainees in custody were tested for the virus.

Of that number, six tested negative, while 123 are awaiting test results.

In addition, the sheriff said that nine Cook County sheriff's employees have tested positive, the same number as Thursday.

The sheriff said staff from Cermak Health Services of Cook County are closely monitoring the detainees on the living units where these individuals affected were housed and will test any detainees who are symptomatic.

As of Thursday evening, the number of positive cases among was detainees was 24.
