Man gets 15 years in Zion hit-and-run

A Kenosha, Wisconsin, man was sentenced to 15 years in prison this week for leaving the scene of a 2017 crash in Zion that killed a 19-year-old from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

During a trial in June, Dennis C. Russell Jr., 35, had been convicted of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, according to a news release from the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

His sentence also includes two years of mandatory supervised release, however, Russell must serve at least 50% of his term to be eligible. He will receive 513 days credit for time served in the Lake County jail awaiting trial.

Randall Lee Harrison Jr., 19, was riding bikes with another person when they were hit by Russell, the news release said. Harrison was pronounced dead just after midnight on Oct. 21, 2017, on Green Bay Road near 9th Street; the other person was injured.

Russell left the scene and abandoned the car, but police found it and were able to trace it back to him and also found DNA on the hood that was a likely match for Harrison, officials said.
