Expect revamped Terminal 5 at O'Hare by 2021

Chicago officials broke ground Wednesday on a new Terminal 5, part of the latest modernization at O'Hare International Airport.

The project that will expand the 25-year-old terminal adds 350,000 square feet. This will allow for 10 new gates, 15 restaurants and shops, extra security lanes and more premium lounge space to be completed by 2021.

In 2022, the terminal's baggage system will be upgraded.

"We are offering increased connections, better services, and more reasons for travelers to choose O'Hare than ever before," Aviation Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee said.

Other aspects of O'Hare's latest construction program include a Global Terminal, which will replace Terminal 2 and handle international flights.

That project will also enable an entrance and facility on the western side of the airport with connections to other terminals.
