A 16-year-old girl died after a two-vehicle crash Friday night in Wauconda, officials said.

Police were called to the crash on Route 12, just south of Case Road, at 10:15 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Wauconda Police Department.

An 18-year-old Cary man had been driving a black Hyundai Elantra south on Route 12 and crossed the center median into the northbound lanes, where he collided with a gray Ford Focus, the release said.

The Ford Focus was driven by a 16-year-old McHenry girl who had three passengers: Two 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old, all of whom also were from McHenry, according to the news release.

The 18-year-old and 16-year-old drivers were extricated from their cars and taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Barrington, as were one of the 14-year-olds and the 15-year-old, the release said.

The other 14-year-old was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for treatment and was released, officials said.

The 16-year-old girl later died from her injuries, the release said.

Officials are investigating the crash, and charges are pending, the release said.
