Hawthorn Woods house fire causes $30k in damage

A house fire was started by an outdoor fire pit in the backyard of a home in the 0-100 block of Steeplechase Drive in Hawthorn Woods Thursday, according to Lake Zurich Fire Department Captain Jeff Grant.

Fire crews arrived around 3:15 p.m. with all of the home's occupants outside, but the roof of the two-story residence was on fire, according to Grant.

The fire was stopped 19 minutes later, at 3:34, Grant said.

An early estimate of the damage to the home was put at $30,000 but an estimated $700,000 in property and contents were saved, according to Grant.

The Lake Zurich Fire Department received assistance from fire departments from Wauconda, Countryside, Barrington, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Nunda, Cary, Libertyville, Fox River Grove and Wheeling.
