Mussman leading second-time challenger Bernas

Democratic state Rep. Michelle Mussman appears on her way to winning a fifth term over the second-time challenge of fellow Schaumburg resident and Schaumburg Township District Library Trustee Jillian Bernas.

With 61.3 percent of precincts reporting, Mussman's 14,929 votes represented 57.5 percent of the total to Bernas' 11,032, unofficial totals showed Tuesday.

While campaigning, both Bernas and Mussman claimed their views on what is needed in Springfield were more in line with the majority of 56th District residents, whatever their party affiliation.

Bernas, a library trustee since 2015, said she thinks all residents of the district are looking for more effective representation and a change in the state's leadership.

Mussman said that through the time and attention she's given residents, she has built a reputation for reliability, consistency and honesty. She added that some have told her she's the only Democrat for whom they vote.
