Naperville North student charged with knife threat
An 18-year-old Naperville North High School student arrested and charged Friday with threatening a classmate on campus while armed with a 3-inch knife is free on bail.
Dominick Feldman, of the 1300 block of Monmouth Avenue in Naperville, faces a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon after the altercation Friday at the school.
Feldman is accused of walking behind another student in a hallway and, while armed with the knife, saying "put that cellphone away or I'll shank you," authorities said. The classmate, who was not injured, ran away and told a teacher.
DuPage County Judge Timothy McJoynt set Feldman's bail at $2,000 Saturday, meaning he needed to post $200 to be released from the DuPage County jail while the case is pending. Feldman posted $200 Saturday morning, records show.
Prosecutors had argued for a $250,000 bail, meaning he would need to post $25,000 to go free.
"The allegations against Mr. Feldman are extremely serious," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in an announcement of the arrest. "Anyone caught with a deadly weapon on school grounds will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Any action, or even the threat of action, directed at the safety of our schools will be fully investigated and anyone suspected of such behavior will be charged accordingly."
Feldman is next due in court Nov. 19. He faces a punishment ranging from probation to up to three years in prison if convicted.
"Violence prevention at our schools remains a top priority of my administration," Naperville Police Chief Bob Marshall said in the announcement. "Thankfully, no one was injured in this alleged incident. Keeping our schools safe is everyone's responsibility and as such, I commend the student who brought this matter to the attention of school personnel."
