Man charged with attacking Warren Township woman during break-in

A man is in custody for breaking into a Warren Township house and beating and choking a woman, authorities said Thursday.

Lonnie J. Henderson, 39, has been charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct for breaking into the house of a former acquaintance on the 18700 block of West Ash Drive, authorities said.

The victim was treated by paramedics and released.

Authorities said Henderson, who does not have a known permanent address, forced entry into the victim's house, then choked and battered her. The victim escaped and dialed 9-1-1 about 2:20 a.m., authorities said.

Lake County sheriff's deputies arrived at the house and found Henderson had left. A sheriff's police dog and his deputy handler responded to the scene, tracked Henderson's scent for a half-mile and found him hiding in a marshy area near a business, authorities said.

Once the police dog barked, Henderson surrendered and was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.

"This is yet another example of the important value of our Sheriff's Canine Teams," Sheriff Mark Curran said in a news release. "From fleeing felons to high-risk missing persons, our Canine Teams are tremendously successful keeping Lake County safe."

Henderson remains in Lake County jail awaiting bond court.
