One in custody after pregnant Hanover Park woman killed in Streamwood crash

Kanaesha Wilson of Hanover Park was about 20 minutes away when she got the call from Aries Cobian, the mother of her godchildren, that her car had overheated and broken down on East Lake Street in Streamwood at 7:23 p.m. Monday.

Wilson told Cobian, whom she regarded as an older sister, that she was on her way.

But about 10 minutes later, Wilson said, she received a call from her mother saying Cobian had been struck by another vehicle while trying to push her own with her cousin.

Cobian, 29, who had recently moved to Hanover Park from Glendale Heights, would be pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m. at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

She was 11 weeks pregnant as well as the mother of children ages 10 years, 8 years, 3 years, and 5 months old, Wilson said.

"I never told her to get out and push," Wilson said Tuesday. "She was in a rush because she had food in the car she didn't want to spoil."

Streamwood police Tuesday said they had one adult in custody and were continuing to investigate the crash in which a 2001 Toyota pickup truck struck Cobian and the 1994 Oldsmobile sedan she and her cousin had been pushing just east of South Park Avenue.

No one else was injured, and no citations had been filed by Tuesday night.

Wilson said Cobian's pregnancy was not common knowledge, which is why she had been pushing the car with her cousin while his girlfriend had steered from the driver's seat.

"If he had known she was pregnant, he never would have let her push the car," Wilson said. "I don't think they got anywhere because she was too tiny to be able to push it."

At the scene, Wilson said she heard from Cobian's cousin that other vehicles had driven around their efforts to push the Oldsmobile before it and Cobian were struck.

Later, at the hospital, Wilson was told that Cobian had suffered broken legs, a broken torso and a fractured skull. She had had no heartbeat when paramedics performed CPR at the scene.

Wilson, whose cousin is the father of Cobian's three oldest children, said Cobian's relationship with her kids was her defining characteristic.

"She loved her kids," Wilson said. "She would do anything for her kids. Even though they were years apart, she treated them equally."

Plans call for the children to go live with their father, she said.

"They're trying to cope," Wilson said of the children. "The younger ones really don't know."

Wilson added that Cobian also was always there to give support to Wilson's mother, who's been suffering from a brain tumor.

Natalia Derevyanny, the communication director for the Cook County Bureau of Administration, said Tuesday night that an autopsy for Cobian will be completed Wednesday morning by the Cook County medical examiner's office.
