Local roads to be resurfaced, patched in East Dundee

East Dundee is spending up to $325,000 to relaunch a street improvement program that has been stagnant for the last three years.

Several "significantly deteriorated" local roads have been deemed in need of immediate repair based on observations from village staff members and complaints from residents, Public Works Director Phil Cotter said. To start addressing those problem areas, he said, parts of five streets will be resurfaced, and an "extensive" pavement patching program will be completed by this fall.

Moving forward, Cotter said, the goal is to identify and address critical road projects on an annual basis.

"Our streets need attention. They need the improvement," he said. "The village board was gracious to extend the authority to staff to do what we need to do to get our streets in the condition we'd like them to be in."

The village has been deferring roadway repairs since 2015 when its most recent street improvement program was implemented, Cotter said. With road conditions becoming increasingly worse over time, village officials decided to prioritize repaving and patching projects in their 2018-19 budget.

The village board last week agreed to hire Mount Prospect-based Arrow Road Construction Company to complete the resurfacing and patching work for roughly $287,960. The resolution also allows the village to spend up to an additional $37,000 if patching quantities exceed initial estimates, Cotter said.

The roads that will be resurfaced this year include Johnson Street from Van Buren to River streets; Third Street from Railroad to Hill streets; Barrington Avenue from Second to Third streets; Wendt Street from Howard Avenue to the dead end; and Linden Avenue from Park Street to Oak Drive.

Construction is expected to begin late this month or in early September, Cotter said. The work must be completed by Oct. 15, according to the contract.

"We're excited to have a program this year," he said. "Hopefully we'll get it going here as soon as possible and get our streets in better condition."
