Geneva firefighters happen upon deck fire early Tuesday

Geneva firefighters returning to the station early Tuesday morning made an unexpected stop at a home on the 2200 block of Fargo Boulevard when they happened to notice the attached deck was on fire, officials said.

The crew arrived around 3:55 a.m. Tuesday; they entered the home to evacuate the residents, who hadn't yet been roused by the flames, according to a news release issued by the Geneva Fire Department on Tuesday.

The fire was out about 15 minutes later, and no injuries were reported. The deck sustained significant damage, but the home was unaffected. Fire officials believe the blaze stemmed from an improperly used fire pit.

Firefighters from Batavia, St. Charles and Elburn all assisted the Geneva Fire Department at the scene, and the West Chicago Fire Department manned Geneva Fire Station No. 1 during the call.
