Manufacturing apprenticeship program coming to Oakton this fall

Oakton Community College will collaborate with the Industry Consortium for Advanced Technical Training to begin offering industrial maintenance apprenticeship programs for students this fall.

Oakton is one of 11 colleges nationally partnering with the consortium, enabling it to offer an innovative program for high-tech manufacturers.

It's benchmarked on the German Dual Education System, an industry-led approach to education developed in conjunction with technology leaders, combining "on-the-job training" with theory and practice through an associate degree program to train a globally-competitive workforce.

The program is accessible, even for small companies, and classroom and lab training is provided by Oakton.

"The company pays for them to complete their education," says Manufacturing Technology Chair Joe Cirone. "The program allows students to work three days and take classes at Oakton two days a week."
