No one harmed in South Elgin garage fires

Firefighters battled a fire Wednesday night in South Elgin that significantly damaged a garage, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters responded to a blaze at a single-family home in the 1700 block of North La Fox Street about 7:10 p.m., Assistant Fire Chief Mike Rothecker said.

Flames were billowing out the roof of the garage when firefighters arrived, he said. The homeowner, who was the only occupant at the time of the fire, escaped unharmed, Rothecker said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at 7:40 p.m. and left the scene about 10:30 p.m. Fire damage was limited to the garage. Though smoke entered the home, the residents will not be displaced, Rothecker said.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate remains under investigation.
