Man pleads guilty to sexually abusing Des Plaines-area girl

A Tennessee man who authorities say sexually abused a girl beginning when she was 7 years old and living in the Des Plaines area was sentenced to 14 years in prison and ordered to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender.

Douglas Nicholas, 46, of the 200 block of W. College St. in Dyer, Tennessee, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to aggravated criminal sexual assault, court records show.

Nicholas, who had been held on $2.5 million bail in Cook County Jail since his October 2016 arrest, received credit for 653 days in custody, according to court records. He was also ordered to pay $1,154 in fines.

According to prosecutors, Nicholas first abused the girl in 2005 on her 7th birthday. After she disclosed the assault to her mother, the girl was sent to live with a relative in another state, prosecutors said.

By 2012, the girl was back in Illinois, according to authorities. Between October and December of that year, they say Nicholas abused the girl at an Elk Grove Village motel where her relatives were living, prosecutors said. They say he threatened the girl who - after telling her mother about the attack - was sent to live with a different relative.

The girl reported the abuse to a school counselor in May 2015. The counselor notified the Department of Children and Family Services and Elk Grove Village and Des Plaines police, authorities said.
