District 158 school board to fill vacancy Thursday

The Huntley Community School District 158 school board is expected to appoint someone to fill a board vacancy during a special meeting Thursday.

The opening arose after school board President Don Drzal resigned in May. Drzal was elected to the board in 2009 and served as president since 2013. He stepped down because of a challenging schedule due to starting a new job in Chicago, officials said.

His replacement will serve until the school board election next spring. Board Vice President Michael Fleck has since assumed the presidency.

Five candidates initially applied to fill the open seat. One dropped out before interviews began this week.

Contenders are: Ra'Shawn Walker, of Lake in the Hills, contract oversight specialist with the U.S. Department of Justice; Chris Carter, of Huntley, a district parent and information security senior manager with Zurich Insurance; Kim Skaja, of Union, a semiretired sales professional who previously served on the District 158 school board for 22 years (1995-2017); and Jamie Wombacher, of Huntley, a district parent and partner with the Woodstock law firm Wand Lee Wombacher LLC.

The board's special meeting will begin at 8 p.m. in the board room of the District 158 administrative building, 650 Academic Drive, Algonquin.
