Apartment construction begins on former Sim's Bowl site in Des Plaines

Construction has begun on a 7-story, 113-unit apartment building on the former Sim's Bowl site in downtown Des Plaines.

When complete, the building will include a mix of apartments, from alcove to two-bedrooms, and offer amenities such as a fitness center, yoga studio, club room with demonstration kitchen, dog spa, bike storage, outdoor amenity deck, work from home suite and conference room. Located at 1555 Ellinwood Ave., the development will also have 1,400 square feet of ground floor retail space.

While the project is being called a transit-oriented development because of its proximity to the Metra station, it only received approvals from the city council in November 2016 after the city sold a sliver of unused property next door that gave the developer more room for parking. Opus Development Co. is developing the property in conjunction with Berkshire Group.

The iconic Sim's Bowl closed in 2009 after 55 years in business and was torn down two years later.
