Third person sought in Elgin home invasion, shooting over marijuana

A third person is wanted in the May 29 home invasion and shooting in Elgin over an ounce of marijuana after missing a court date this week on an unrelated charged.

Demetrius M. Cochran, 19, of the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive, Elgin, has been charged with home invasion, armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the episode on the city's near west side, according to Kane County court records.

Cochran and two others are accused of forcing their way into a home on the 0-99 block of North Edison, robbing a man of an ounce of marijuana and $10, court records show.

Police responded that afternoon to a report of a man shot at the corner of Edison and Larkin avenues.

Tyrell D. Sumling, 29, of Elgin and Frankie Rivera Jr., 23, of Carpentersville were arrested and were being held at the Kane County jail.

Charges against Cochran were filed June 9, records show.

At the time of the shooting, Cochran was free on bail after an arrest in December 2017 on felony charges he possessed a stolen black, 2001 Dodge Neon, records show. Cochran's bail was set at $30,000, later reduced to 10 percent of $10,000, and was eventually released on his own recognizance by Judge John Barsanti, court records show.

Cochran was a no-show in court on the stolen vehicle case last month and again this week.

If convicted of the most severe charges in the shooting, Cochran faces six to 30 years in prison, plus an additional 15 years for discharging a firearm.

Sumling and Rivera face the same penalties. Rivera is due in court Friday and Sumling's next court date is Aug. 8.
