Woodstock man sentenced to 18 years for kidnapping, sex abuse of 4-year-old boy

A Woodstock man who said voices in his head told him to kidnap and sexually abuse a 4-year-old boy was sentenced to 18 years in prison Friday.

Kevin A. Sorensen, 40, pleaded guilty in April to aggravated kidnapping and aggravated criminal sexual assault charges but told the judge he was mentally ill and that Satan told him to commit the crime, the Chicago Tribune reported.

On Aug. 11, Sorensen grabbed the boy from his bike near Olson Park in Woodstock and carried him away, according to a news release from the McHenry County state's attorney's office. As the other children who were with the boy cried for help and chased after Sorensen, two workers driving in the area spotted him.

The workers, who authorities said witnessed Sorensen sexually assaulting the boy, pursued Sorensen until he released the boy and detained him until police arrived.

In court, Sorensen's attorney said Sorensen has been diagnosed with severe mental illness and has been hospitalized several times, the Tribune reported.

Under Illinois law, Sorensen must serve 85 percent of his sentence and will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
